Why is Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler Announce buddies but are in a rivalry at the same time?

It just does'nt make sence really because they both announce, the only difference is cole is in a glass square. Why do you think the wwe wanted them to have this rivalry continue since it's been lasting ever since Wrestlemania 27?
